What the Spread Does
The point spread creates a handicap. A favorite at -3.5 must win by more than 3.5 points for that spread selection to cover; an underdog at +3.5 can lose by three and still cover.
Half Points and Pushes
Half points avoid ties. A whole-number spread such as -3 can produce a push if the favorite wins by exactly three, subject to the market rules. A push normally returns the stake.
Price vs Number
-3.5 at -105 and -3.5 at -120 are not the same value because the required win rate is different. Moving from -3 to -3.5 can also be important because it crosses a key outcome margin.
Sports4Play Approach
We preserve the spread and price that existed when an official pick was published. If the market moves materially, the later number can be analyzed separately without rewriting the original record.
